In the United States, there are discussions about the revival of the Russian gas pipeline "Nord Stream 2" to Europe with the support of American investors. According to sources from the Financial Times, this plan belongs to Matthias Warnig, a former Stasi officer in East Germany and a close associate of Vladimir Putin.
This is reported by Financial Times referencing its own sources.
Some officials stated that certain members of the administration are aware of the initiative and view it as part of efforts to restore relations with Moscow, FT writes.
According to one interlocutor, some members of the investor consortium led by the U.S. have already drafted a deal plan with Gazprom. Such a plan would require the U.S. to lift sanctions on Russia, agree to resume sales during the Russian-Ukrainian war, and allow Germany to supply gas to any potential buyers in Europe.
"There are still sanctions in place in Europe, and Germany signing an agreement to revive 'Nord Stream' would cause significant disagreements. All of this is still a long way off," noted one official.
Reference. Previously, one of the pipelines of "Nord Stream 2" was blown up due to sabotage in September 2022. The other pipeline of "Nord Stream 2," with a capacity of 27.5 billion cubic meters of gas per year, was not damaged but has never been used. Trump also actively criticized the pipeline during his first term.
Background. Earlier, Mind reported that Polish President Andrzej Duda stated that the "Nord Stream" pipelines should be dismantled. He believes that dismantling the "Pipelines" would allow countries like Germany to "resist the temptation" to resume gas supplies from Russia to support their own economy.
