Thousands of people gathered in Washington on Saturday to protest ahead of the inauguration of the elected U.S. President Donald Trump.

According to Reuters, activists advocating for women's rights, racial justice, and other civil movements opposed Trump's new policies, which they claim threaten the constitutional rights of various minorities and vulnerable populations.

The publication notes that Trump opponents had gathered for protests before his first inauguration in 2017. However, eight years ago, those protests were "much larger."

"Protests against Trump's inauguration this time are less extensive, partly because many activists feel that the women's rights movement in the U.S. has become more fragmented since Trump's victory. Organizers had predicted 50,000 participants, while local police expected about 25,000. More than 300 additional marches were planned across the country," the authors of the article write.

Groups advocating for reproductive rights, eco-activists, and civil rights defenders participated in the protest march.

"Many people are disappointed. A lot of people feel that we have fought for so long, yet nothing has changed," said 26-year-old Olivia Hoffman, an employee at a California center that supports low-income women and transgender youth.

Another protester attended the march to speak out against Trump's pressure on Canada. The sign he carried read, "We are not your 51st state." Other signs included messages like "Feminists Against Fascists" and "People Over Politics."

"I'm glad some people here are filled with hope. But that's not me. I think we are doomed," said 65-year-old Nancy Robinson, a retiree from Maryland who also participated in the protest march, according to Reuters.

Civil rights movement leaders stated they would be demonstrating throughout the weekend.

"We need to show that we are more numerous, and we are not going to back down," the participants declared.

Background. Earlier, Mind reported that Donald Trump's team is preparing a large-scale plan for the energy sector and will present it a few days after the inauguration, which will include approval of export permits for new liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects and an increase in oil extraction on the shelf and federal lands in the U.S.
