Google has agreed to acquire a portion of the Taiwanese company HTC's business related to extended reality (XR) technologies for $250 million. The deal includes the transfer of part of the HTC VIVE engineering team and non-exclusive rights to use intellectual property.
This was reported by Google's press service.
The agreement aims to accelerate the development of the Android XR platform, which is focused on virtual and augmented reality devices, including headsets and glasses. For Google, this represents another step in the competition for leadership in the rapidly growing XR market, where Apple and Meta hold prominent positions, as stated in the announcement.
This marks the second significant deal between Google and HTC. In 2017, the American company acquired HTC's smartphone division for $1.1 billion.
Background. Earlier, Mind reported that Google intends to acquire part of HTC, which manufactures smartphones, according to the Chinese portal Commercial Times. The acquisition was expected to help the Taiwanese company resolve its financial issues.
