French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz have urged the European Union to engage in closer and more coordinated cooperation following Donald Trump's victory in the U.S. presidential elections.
The two leaders congratulated Trump on his win the day before. Macron expressed his willingness to collaborate, stating, "as we have done over the past four years," to achieve "greater peace and prosperity."
Spokesperson for the French government, Mod Bréguet, reported that Macron also reached out to Chancellor Olaf Scholz to discuss the upcoming political changes on the horizon.
According to Bréguet, Macron emphasized that Europeans must take collective responsibility to ensure their approach is not "every man for himself" or focused on isolated bilateral relations. Instead, they must concentrate on a unified European strategy.
Scholz added, "The EU must now stand particularly united – and act united." He highlighted close collaboration with heads of state and government of the EU, noting the upcoming meeting in Budapest on November 7.
"Germany and the U.S. are united by a partnership and friendship that have been strengthened over decades. We believe that together we will be better. We can achieve much more by working together than against each other," Scholz wrote on his account on platform X.
Background. It is worth noting: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky plans to attend the European Political Community summit in Hungary on November 7, where European leaders will discuss security challenges in Europe amid the Russian war against Ukraine. The victory of Donald Trump in the U.S. elections and how the arrival of a new president will impact U.S.-EU relations will also be on the agenda.
