The European Union intends to increase its gas purchases from other countries, including the United States, to replace supplies from Russia.
This was stated by EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen, reports Reuters.
He also mentioned that the EU plans to more actively utilize renewable energy sources to reduce overall dependence on fossil fuels.
“Instead of using taxpayers' money, the citizens' funds, to pay for gas, the proceeds from which go into Putin's war chest, we need to ensure that we produce our own energy,” Jørgensen emphasized.
According to him, Brussels is preparing changes to the permitting procedures to expedite the expansion of renewable energy. For industries and home heating, where gas cannot be quickly replaced by electricity, the EU will intensify efforts to find alternative supply sources.
“And then my job is to make sure it's cheap and not Russian,” Jørgensen stressed.
“The need for gas will still exist, and there we will have to look for other sources besides Russia, and this could also mean increased imports from the US,” he added.
Background. Earlier, Mind reported that gas prices in Europe have surged to a maximum over the past two years. Currently, European gas storage facilities are filled to less than half – the lowest level in three years.
