The budget committee of the German parliament has urged Finance Minister Jörg Kukies to approve additional military aid to Ukraine amounting to 3 billion euros, reports Reuters.
The request received support from opposition parties - the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Free Democrats (FDP), while representatives of the ruling coalition - the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the Greens - abstained from voting.
The final decision rests with the finance minister; however, such requests are typically granted. The German budget has sufficient funds for this initiative, and Chancellor Olaf Scholz also backs the additional aid, though he insists on financing it through a mechanism of additional borrowing.
This 3 billion euros could supplement the 8 billion allocated for Ukraine in 2024. Meanwhile, for 2025, German aid is set to decrease to 4 billion euros, as it is expected that Kyiv will be able to meet some of its needs through a G7 loan of 50 billion dollars.
