The spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State, Matthew Miller, announced the readiness of the United States to support negotiations between Ukraine and Russia if President Volodymyr Zelensky shows interest in them.
As reported by European Truth, Miller emphasized that if the Ukrainian President decides he wants to initiate talks with Russia, the U.S. will back this initiative.
“This has been our policy – our longstanding policy, that it is President Zelensky who should decide when the time for negotiations has come. This is not something we or any other country should push him toward,” he highlighted.
The spokesperson stressed that the U.S. will support Zelensky in any process “aimed at ensuring a just and lasting peace, but ultimately, it is his decision.” At the same time, he pointed out that “there are no signs that Putin is willing to abandon his goal of continuing to absorb Ukrainian territory.”
According to Miller, the negotiations that Putin desires “are not the negotiations that President Zelensky is interested in, nor should he be.”
Previously, Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine needs a sufficient amount of weapons, rather than support in negotiations.
