Ukraine and the European Union have reached an agreement to increase electricity import capacities during the winter months.

This was reported by the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine.

Under the agreement, starting from December 1, the maximum electricity import capacity from EU countries will be raised from the current 1.7 GW to 2.1 GW. This decision aims to enhance the resilience of the Ukrainian energy system, considering the potential shelling and destruction of infrastructure by Russia.

Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko expressed gratitude to European partners, particularly European Commissioner Kadri Simson, for their support in preparing for winter. Additionally, Ukraine will have guaranteed 250 MW of capacity for emergency assistance from the EU. As noted by the Ministry of Energy, the issue of expanding import capabilities was discussed in September during a meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Kyiv.
