In Dnipropetrovsk region, two teenagers were walking on the frozen surface of a body of water and fell through the ice. The incident occurred in the city of Samara, formerly known as Novomoskovsk, and had serious consequences for one of the victims who ended up in the hospital. This was reported by "Vydomo" citing local communities.
A walk that began as a typical winter activity turned into a fight for survival. Unfortunately, the thickness of the ice was insufficient to support the weight of the two teenagers. The fragile ice crust gave way beneath them, plunging them into icy water. At this time of year, water temperatures are extremely low, posing a danger to human health. Hypothermia can develop rapidly, leading to irreversible consequences for the body.
The situation was further complicated by the likelihood that the children were not properly equipped for such outings. The lack of specialized clothing designed to protect against hypothermia increased the risk of serious consequences. Additionally, the absence of adequate adult supervision, which could have timely stopped the young thrill-seekers, also played a negative role. Lacking experience and awareness of the danger, the children made the decision to venture onto the ice without assessing its condition.
Fortunately, rescue services came to the teenagers' aid. The prompt actions of the rescuers, with direct assistance from nearby fishermen, allowed for a quick extraction of the children from the icy water. However, despite the rapid response of the rescuers and the provision of first aid on-site, the effects of being in the freezing water turned out to be quite serious.
One of the teenagers, suffering from severe hypothermia, was taken to the nearest hospital in poor condition.
He is currently under medical supervision.
In conclusion, we remind you once again that the thickness of the ice depends on many factors: the speed of the river current, the depth of the body of water, air temperature, the presence of under-ice heat sources, and snow cover. Even if the ice seems strong enough, its reliability can be extremely deceptive.
