The Lithuanian branch of the Swedish telecommunications company Telia Lietuva has repaired the communication cable between Lithuania and Sweden in the Baltic Sea. It was damaged about two weeks ago.

This was reported by RBK-Ukraine citing LRT.

Company representatives stated that traffic through the Baltic Sea has been successfully restored. They also noted that this channel accounted for about a third of international internet traffic, but the public did not experience any disruptions due to the damage.

"We have several internet connections in Lithuania with significant bandwidth reserves, so users can be assured that the connection will remain operational even under the most challenging circumstances," said Telia's Chief Technology Officer Andrius Shemeškaavičius.

What happened to the cables in the Baltic Sea

Two underwater telecommunications cables have been damaged in the Baltic Sea, including C-Lion1, which connects Helsinki and Rostock. The reasons for the incident are under investigation, but German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius suggested that the damages could have been intentional.

Among the suspects is the Chinese cargo ship Yi Peng 3, captained by a Russian. The vessel drew attention due to its unusual route and was stopped for inspection by the Danish Navy.

The operator of the C-Lion1 cable reported that repair work has begun, which will take 5 to 15 days. The 1173 km long cable, in operation since 2016, provides direct communication between Finland and Central Europe.

Additionally, damage to the cable between Lithuania and Sweden has been discovered in the Baltic Sea.
